Bridging the gap between academia and industry
Most scientific research is now open access; but without research training, it can be a daunting and difficult process to find and implement the required methodologies. After many years of performing psychophysics research at top universities, we are here to help.
At Real Psychophysics we believe that the methods developed through cutting edge research should be available to everyone in order to answer more applied questions.
Questions such as
'What is the best colour hi viz to wear?'
'Does having indicators embedded in brake lights make them more difficult to spot?'
'Do certain smells encourage people to change their behaviours?'
'Which of the materials that we've generated make our product more / less recognisable?'
'Which design of our latest software app do our staff find most intuitive?'
The list of possible questions is endless. If you have a question like this, psychophysics can provide an answer.
We will work with you to understand your specific research question and establish suitable hypotheses to be tested. We will then design a bespoke experiment based on published psychophysics techniques to accurately collect the data required to answer your specific question.
Most psychophysics experiments are computer based, however, there are some situations when physical experiments are the best option. Whichever is most suitable for your research question, we will make sure your experiment is built, set up and ready to go.
Depending on the method and location required for your experiment, there will likely be two options available at this point. Either we can train you to run the experiment yourselves or, if you would prefer, we can run the full experiment for you.
Once all the required data has been collected, we will perform all necessary statistical analyses to ensure that you get the most out of your data. Raw data can also be provided should you have your own in house statisticians.
An interpretation of the analysis will be presented at the Project Results Meeting. This is designed to ensure we provide a clear answer to your initial research question and to provide the opportunity for you to ask any further questions.
Once you are happy you understand the results, we will provide a final Project Document which will detail the methods used, analysis and interpretation.
All experiments will be carried out in a manner consistent with the Declaration of Helsinki. All participants will be provided with information prior to the experiment and their informed consent will be gained before any further participation can take place. We will not collect any data on protected characteristics unless vital to the specific research question and all data will be fully anonymised. We will not conduct any experiments requiring participation of individuals who are unable to provide their own informed consent.
We understand that confidentiality can be a high priority in terms of both security and competition. We will discuss this with you at our first meeting and establish requirements that will cover all aspects of the project going forward. Unlike research performed at academic institutions, we have no pressures to publish in scientific journals so you can rest assured that there is no conflict between confidentiality and the need to publish. However, once your project is complete, should you wish it to be written up as a scientific article and published for the wider population to access, we have experience of publishing in top quality peer reviewed journals and would be happy to discuss this option with you further.
We welcome enquries about any and all research questions based around human perception and will always be happy to discuss your potential projects.
We look forward to talking with you
